The Invention of Writing
Writing is one of the most marvelous things ever invented by man. Indeed, our present civilization depends largely upon writing. But for it, the nations of the world would at this very moment know little about one another and would still be in a state of ignorance and semi-savagery.
Who was the creator of this marvelous invention? Some caveman most likely, a man in appearance more like an ape; yet a man who was filled with the desire to make some lasting record of the strange things he saw about him. This man was also the world’s first artist, for the first. writing was picture writing and took the form of pictures of the bears and stags and other animals which lived in the forest round the caveman’s home. How do we know this, you may ask? The answer is that in certain parts of the world there are caves on the walls of which such pictures may be seen drawn and painted many thousands of years ago. These ancient cavemen had minds like small children. Just as they drew pictures of things, they saw in the world about them. So today, if you give a small child pencil and paper, he will draw pictures of houses and cows and men and women long before he learns to write.

লিখন পদ্ধতির আবিষ্কার
মানুষ কর্তৃক এ পর্যন্ত যা কিছু আবিষ্কৃত হয়েছে তার মধ্যে সবচেয়ে বিস্ময়কর আবিষ্কার হচ্ছে লিখন পদ্ধতি। প্রকৃতপক্ষে, বর্তমান সভ্যতার প্রধান ভিত্তিই হলো লিখন পদ্ধতি। লিখন পদ্ধতি আবিষ্কৃত না হলে পৃথিবীর বিভিন্ন জাতি আজও একে অপরের সম্পর্কে খুব বেশি কিছু জানতে পারতো না এবং এখনও অজ্ঞ আর অর্ধ-বর্বর থেকে যেত।
এই অপূর্ব আবিষ্কারের সৃষ্টি কার অবদান। সম্ভবত, উল্লুকের আকৃতিবিশিষ্ট হলেও কোনো গুহাবাসী মানব হয়তো বা চেয়েছিল যে, সে তার চারপাশে যেসব অদ্ভুত অদ্ভুত জিনিসগুলো অবলোকন করেছে, সেগুলোকে চিত্রে রূপদান করে তাদেরকে চোখের সামনে স্থায়ী করে চারপাশের দৃশ্যমান বস্তু ও জীবজন্তুকে মূর্ত করে ফুটিয়ে তুলতে। এসব চিত্রই প্রথম লিখন যেগুলোতে দেখতে পাওয়া যাবে ভল্লুক ও হরিণের ছবি। প্রশ্ন হতে পারে, এসব কথা আমরা কিভাবে জানতে পারলাম? এর জবাবে আমরা বলতে পারি যে, হাজার হাজার বছর আগে পৃথিবীর বিভিন্ন স্থানে যে অসংখ্য গুহা-গহ্বর রয়েছে, সেগুলোর গায়ে এসব চিত্র খোদাই করা হয়েছে। এসব আদি গুহাবাসীর মন ছিল শিশুসুলভ। শিশুরা যা দেখে তারই চিত্র অঙ্কন করতে পছন্দ করে। এমনিভাবে, আজও আমরা যদি কোনো শিশুকে কাগজ ও পেন্সিল দিয়ে কিছু আঁকতে বলি, দেখা যাবে তারা তাদের দেখা বস্তুর ছবিই প্রথমে আঁকবে- যেমন তারা আঁকবে তাদের বাড়ি-ঘর ও গরু-মহিষ এবং মানুষের ছবি। এসব তারা যখন অঙ্কন করবে, তখনও তারা কিন্তু লিখতে শিখে নি।

Ans: Writing is considered as one of the most marvellous and important inventions of man. The reason is that our civilization is largely dependent on it. It would not have been possible for the nations of the world to know anything about one another without the knowledge of writing. Again, without writing we would still be in a state of ignorance and semi-savagery. Writing which played a major role in making us civilized is regarded as a marvellous invention. This art was invented by cavemen whose mind were then like those of children. They would draw pictures of things they saw about them. They started doing this in the cave of the walls and from such crude drawing writing was invented.
