War and Peace
Most of the people who appear most often in history books are great conquerors. Strangely enough the people who really helped civilization forward are often never mentioned at all. We do not know who made the first boat or calculated the length of the year but we know our killers and destroyers. We raise statues to them simply because they fought bravely. But even animals fight. So do savages. To fight is not to be civilized. Moreover, there are other ways of settling quarrels among men or nations. So, really civilized people have been those who have brought peace and happiness to mankind. They have been prophets, saints, doctors, inventors, and discoverers. They have been truly great since instead of inflicting paid and hardship upon humanity. They have healed their wounds. Instead of killing, they have saved human lives. They are really civilized and deserve admiration and respect.

যুদ্ধ এবং শান্তি
ইতিহাসের পাতায় যারা আবির্ভূত হন তাদের অধিকাংশই হলেন মহান বিজেতা। কিন্তু বিস্ময়কর ব্যাপার হলো এই যে, যারা প্রকৃতপক্ষে সভ্যতাকে সামনে এগিয়ে নিয়ে এলেন তাদেরকে আদৌ উল্লেখ করা হয় না প্রায়ই। প্রথম নৌকাটি কে তৈরি করেছিলেন তা আমরা জানি না কিংবা বছরের দৈর্ঘ্য কে প্রথম হিসাব করেছিলেন। কিন্তু আমরা খুনী কিংবা ধ্বংসকারীদের কথা জানি, আমরা তাদের প্রতিকৃতি নির্মাণ করি কারণ তারা সাহসের সাথে যুদ্ধ করেছিলেন। জীবজন্তু কিংবা বর্বর লোকেরা যুদ্ধ করে। কাজেই যুদ্ধ করা মানেই সভ্যতা নয়। মানুষে মানুষে কিংবা জাতিতে জাতিতে যুদ্ধবিগ্রহ মীমাংসার পথও বিদ্যমান আছে। সুতরাং প্রকৃত সভ্য লোক হলো তাঁরা যারা মানবজাতির জন্য সুখ এবং শান্তি আনয়ন করেছেন। তাঁরা হলেন পয়গম্বর, সাধক, ডাক্তার, উদ্ভাবক এবং আবিষ্কারক। তাঁরা সত্যিকার অর্থে মহান। কারণ মানুষকে যন্ত্রণা দেয়ার পরিবর্তে তারা মানুষের ব্যথাকে সারিয়ে তোলেন। হত্যার পরিবর্তে তারা মানুষের জীবনকে বাঁচিয়ে রাখেন। তাঁরাই প্রকৃতপক্ষে সভ্য এবং প্রশংসা ও শ্রদ্ধার দাবিদার।

Generally conquerors appear in the history. But the men who have done a lot to bring peace and happiness, who have healed the pain and sufferings of the humanity are neglected. Actually they are civilized and they deserve our admiration.
