Automated Teller Machine (ATM)
An Automated Teller Machine (ATM) is a computerized telecommunications device which provides the customers of a financed institution with access to financial transactions in a public place without the help of a human clerk on bank letter. On most modern ATMs, the customers are identified by inserting a respective plastic ATM card with a magnetic strip or a plastic smartcard with a chip, which contains a unique number and some security information, such as an expiration date on CVC. Security is provided by the customer entering a personal identification number (PIN). Using an ATM customers can access to their bank accounts in order to make cash withdrawals and check their account balances.
The ATM was first invented by Scot John Shepherd Barron. The first ATM of the world was installed in a branch of Barclays in the northern London borough of Enfield, Middlesex, in 1967. The ATM got faster, smaller and easier over the years. However, the modern networked ATM was invented in Dallas, Texas, by Don Wetzel in 1968.
ATMs are placed not only near or inside the premises of Bank, but also in locations such as shopping centres /malls, airports, grocery stores, petrol/gas station. Thus two types of ATM installations are found everywhere.
Most of the ATMs are connected to the interbank networks, enabling costumers to withdraw and deposit money from machines, not belong to the bank where they have their accounts or in the country where their accounts are held.
Besides, ATMs include many other functions which are not directly retated to the management of one’s own bank account, such as: paying routine bills, fees and taxes; printing bank statements; updating passbooks; buying or booking tickets, etc.
In many countries, ATMs are called “Bank Machines.” ATMs can also act as an advertising channel for companies to advertise their own products on third party products and services.
