Non-resident Bangladeshi (NRB)
Non-resident Bangladeshi (NRB) is an umbrella term that embodies the expatriate Bangladeshis permanently living as immigrant communities and the migrant workers working on temporary overseas employment. The first section of people has formed ethnic minority societies known as Bangladesh diaspora while the temporary economic migrants may be called expatriate workers. They are earning foreign currency by the sweat of their brow and sending remittance to their families. The migrant workers are sending remittance more than diaspora members.
Every year about two million people come into the job market in Bangladesh, of which half go to work abroad. Bangladesh is an exporter of professional, skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled man power to more than 22 countries. The number of Bangladeshi workers going abroad has increased from 6,087 in 1976 to 4, 75, 300 in 2010, with the highest being 8, 75000 in 2008.
Saudi Arabia is the largest importer of workers from Bangladesh, accounting for the lion’s share of total workers who went abroad during the 1976-2010 period. The United Arab Amirates (UAE) and Malaysia are the other two important destinations for Bangladeshi workers. Bangladeshi migrants are also working in the USA, the UK, Australia, Canada, Germany, Italy, South Africa, Japan etc.
NRBS are more than five millions, out of which about three millions are working in the Middle East and the Gulf States. According to the World Bank statistics, more than 40 percent of the Bangladeshi expatriate workers are working in Saudi Arabia, 16 percent in United Arab Amirates, 10 percent in Kuwait, 10 percent in the United Kingdom and the rest are scattered around the world. The amount of foreign remittance per year is more than 1 billion US dollars on average and it is growing in volume every year. Remittance is 11 precent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The NRBs, therefore, ought to be reared with more attention and care for the greater interest of the country’s economy. Besides the diplomatic missions of Bangladesh need to be more careful of the matter that thousands of Bangladeshi migrant workers are returning home as a result of economic recession and Political turmoil.

অনাবাসিক বাংলাদেশি
“অনাবাসিক বাংলাদেশি” একটি সমগোত্রীয় ধারণা যা অভিবাসী সম্প্রদায় হিসেবে স্থায়ীভাবে বসবাসকারী প্রবাসী বাংলাদেশি এবং কাজের উদ্দেশ্যে অস্থায়ীভাবে বিদেশে গমনকারী শ্রমিক শ্রেণিকেই ইঙ্গিত করে। প্রথম বিভাগের জনসাধারণ সংখ্যালঘিষ্ঠ সমাজে পরিণত হয়েছে যা বাংলাদেশ থেকে বসবাসের জন্য বিদেশে আগমনকারী হিসেবে পরিচিত অপরপক্ষে অস্থায়ীভাবে অর্থনৈতিক মুক্তির জন্য আগমনকারীদের বলা হয় প্রবাসী শ্রমিক। তারা তাদের কপালের ঘাম ঝরিয়ে বৈদেশিক মুদ্রা অর্জন করে এবং তা তাদের পরিবারের জন্য পাঠিয়ে দেয়। এই প্রবাসী শ্রমিকরা বসবাসের জন্য আগমনকারীদের চেয়ে বেশি বৈদেশিক মুদ্রা তাদের পরিবারের জন্য পাঠিয়ে থাকে।

The Non-Resident Bangladeshis (NRB) keep in themselves either in the form of Bangladesh diaspora or in expatriate workers, are earning foreign currency by the sweat of their brow and sending remittance to the country. Bangladesh exports her man powers to more than 22 countries. Saudi Arabia is the country which imports highest workers from Bangladesh. Bangladeshi migrants are also working over Europe and America. The total number of NRB are more than five millions, out of which three millions are working in the Middle East and the Gulf States. The amount of foreign remittance sent by the NRBS per year are more than 1 billion US dollars on average. Remittance is 11 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product of Bangladesh. So, the NRBS are deserved to be taken care of by the Government.
